GPA Calculator

Add your courses with their letter grades and credit hours, and get your GPA on the standard US 4.0 scale — weighted correctly so a 4-credit class counts more than a 1-credit seminar.

Your GPA

Uses the standard US 4.0 scale where A/A+ = 4.0 and each ± step is 0.3 points. Check your school's scale — some treat A+ as 4.3.

How it works

Each letter grade maps to grade points: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0, with plus/minus grades stepping by 0.3 (a B+ is 3.3, an A− is 3.7).

Your GPA is a credit-weighted average. Each course contributes its grade points multiplied by its credit hours (these products are called quality points); the GPA is total quality points divided by total credit hours. That's why a heavy 4-credit course moves your GPA more than a 1-credit elective.

An A in a 3-credit class earns 12 quality points. Get a B+ in another 3-credit class (9.9 points) and an A− in a 4-credit class (14.8 points), and your GPA is 36.7 points ÷ 10 credits = 3.67.

GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) / Σ credits

A/A+ = 4.0 A− = 3.7 B+ = 3.3 B = 3.0 B− = 2.7
C+ = 2.3 C = 2.0 C− = 1.7 D+ = 1.3 D = 1.0 F = 0

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my GPA?

Multiply each course's grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.) by its credit hours to get quality points, add them all up, and divide by your total credit hours. Three courses — an A (3 cr), a B+ (3 cr), and an A− (4 cr) — give 36.7 ÷ 10 = 3.67.

What is a good GPA?

A 3.0 (B average) is generally considered solid, 3.5+ is strong, and 3.7+ puts you in honors territory at most US schools. Competitive graduate programs often expect 3.5 or higher, though standards vary by field.

Is an A+ worth more than an A?

At most schools both count as 4.0, which is what this calculator uses. Some institutions award 4.3 for an A+ — if yours does, your official GPA will be slightly higher than shown here.

What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA (this calculator) caps at 4.0 regardless of course difficulty. Weighted GPA, common in high schools, adds bonus points for honors/AP/IB classes — often 5.0 for an A in an AP course — so weighted GPAs can exceed 4.0.

Do pass/fail courses affect GPA?

Usually not. A 'Pass' typically earns credit hours but no grade points, so it's excluded from the GPA calculation entirely. A 'Fail' often does count as 0.0 and hurts your GPA — check your school's specific policy.
