How to Convert Your GPA to a 100-Point Percentage Scale (and Back)
To convert a 4.0-scale GPA to a percentage, divide the GPA by 4 and multiply by 100 — a 3.5 GPA works out to (3.5 ÷ 4) × 100 = 87.5%. It's a useful approximation for applications and comparisons, but it isn't an exact science, since schools don't all map letter grades to percentages the same way.
The conversion formula
Percentage = (GPA ÷ scale maximum) × 100. On the standard US 4.0 scale, that's GPA ÷ 4 × 100, so each full GPA point is worth 25 percentage points. A 3.70 GPA (three A- grades, for example) converts to (3.70 ÷ 4) × 100 = 92.5%.
If your school uses a different scale maximum — some award up to 4.3 for an A+, others use a 5.0 scale for weighted GPAs — swap in that number instead of 4. On a 4.3 scale, a 3.70 GPA is (3.70 ÷ 4.3) × 100 ≈ 86.0%, noticeably lower than the same GPA read on the standard 4.0 scale.
Why this conversion is only approximate
GPA is a credit-weighted average of discrete letter-grade points (4.0, 3.7, 3.3, and so on in 0.3 steps), while a percentage grade is continuous — an 87% and an 89% are both an A- letter grade' worth of nothing to your GPA, but they're clearly different percentages. Converting a GPA back to percentage can't recover that lost precision; it estimates the midpoint of a range, not your actual average test score.
This is exactly why the conversion is treated as an estimate by the institutions and scholarship programs that ask for it — useful for a rough comparison across systems, not a substitute for an official transcript when precision genuinely matters.
Converting the other direction: percentage to GPA
Going from percentage to GPA uses the same ratio in reverse: GPA = (percentage ÷ 100) × scale maximum. An 82% on a 4.0 scale is (82 ÷ 100) × 4 = 3.28. This direction comes up most for students applying internationally, converting a percentage-based transcript from one country's system into the 4.0 scale a US or Canadian school expects.
Because grading distributions differ so much by country and institution, admissions offices that require this conversion often supply their own official conversion table rather than trusting a generic formula — worth checking before submitting a self-converted GPA on an application.
