Conversions use exact international definitions (1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 pound = 453.59237 g).
How it works
Length and weight conversions go through a base unit (meters and kilograms). Your value is multiplied by its unit's factor to reach the base unit, then divided by the target unit's factor. Because every factor is an exact legal definition — 1 inch is exactly 2.54 cm, 1 pound is exactly 453.59237 g — no precision is lost.
Temperature is different: the scales have different zero points, so conversion needs addition as well as multiplication. Everything is converted to Celsius first, then to the target scale.
Kelvin is the scientific absolute scale — 0 K is absolute zero, the coldest possible temperature, which is −273.15 °C or −459.67 °F.
Length/weight: result = value × factor(from) / factor(to)
Temperature: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32
K = °C + 273.15
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9Frequently asked questions
How many kilometers are in a mile?
One mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometers. To convert miles to kilometers, multiply by 1.609; for kilometers to miles, multiply by 0.621 (or divide by 1.609).
How do I convert kilograms to pounds?
Multiply kilograms by 2.20462. One kilogram is about 2.2 pounds, so 70 kg is roughly 154 lb. Going the other way, one pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg.
What's the formula for Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 9/5 and add 32: °F = °C × 1.8 + 32. So 20 °C is 68 °F. Quick landmarks: 0 °C = 32 °F (freezing), 37 °C = 98.6 °F (body temperature), 100 °C = 212 °F (boiling).
Are these conversions exact?
Yes — the factors used are the exact definitions set by international agreement in 1959: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 pound = 453.59237 g, 1 mile = 1,609.344 m. Any rounding you see is only in the displayed decimal places.
What is a stone in pounds and kilograms?
A stone is a British unit equal to exactly 14 pounds, or about 6.35 kilograms. Body weight in the UK is commonly given in stones and pounds — '11 st 4 lb' means 158 pounds (71.7 kg).
