How to Calculate Your Car's Real MPG From a Fill-Up

The fill-up method, step by step

Step 1: fill the tank completely and note your odometer reading (or reset a trip odometer to zero). Step 2: drive normally until your next fill-up — the more miles between fill-ups, the more accurate the result. Step 3: fill the tank completely again, and note exactly how many gallons it took. Step 4: divide miles driven by gallons used — that's your real mpg for that tank.

A single tank isn't a reliable final answer on its own — averaging 3 to 5 fill-ups smooths out the normal tank-to-tank variation from traffic, terrain, weather, and driving style, giving a genuinely stable number.

Why it's almost always lower than the sticker number

EPA fuel economy ratings are measured under controlled lab conditions that don't match real driving — no full AC load, no stop-and-go traffic, no fully loaded trunk, no hills. Real-world mpg commonly comes in 10–15% below the EPA combined rating, and can be lower still in cold weather (which reduces engine efficiency and increases idling) or on trips made up mostly of short drives that never let the engine fully warm up.

Once you have a real, personally-measured mpg figure, plugging it into a trip cost estimator instead of the sticker number gives a materially more accurate cost projection for planning a road trip's fuel budget.

Using your real number going forward

Once you have a stable average from a few fill-ups, that's the number worth using for any future trip-cost estimate — replacing the manufacturer's EPA figure with your own actual, measured mpg closes most of the gap between an estimated road trip budget and what you'll really spend at the pump.
