How Much to Tip DoorDash and Uber Eats Drivers

Tip 15–20% of the food subtotal (before fees and taxes) on DoorDash, Uber Eats, and similar apps, with a hard floor of $3–5 regardless of order size — a small order still costs the driver real time and gas, so the percentage alone isn't enough on cheap orders.

Why the app's delivery fee isn't your driver's tip

The 'delivery fee' charged by DoorDash, Uber Eats, and similar platforms goes to the company, not the driver — a common and understandable point of confusion, since it sounds like it should compensate the person doing the delivering. Base pay from the app itself typically runs only $2–4 per delivery, meaning the tip usually makes up 60–80% of what a driver actually earns on a given order.

A $0 tip on a typical order can leave a driver with roughly $2–4 for 20–40 minutes of driving, gas, and vehicle wear — well under minimum wage once real costs are factored in, which is the direct financial reality behind why tipping on these platforms specifically carries more weight than it might seem.

The guideline, and when to go higher

15–20% of the food subtotal (not including delivery fee, service fee, or tax) is the standard range, with a $3–5 minimum on small orders. Go higher — 20–25%+ — for a long-distance delivery, bad weather, a large or complicated order, or a multi-stop drop-off, since all of those cost the driver real extra time the base pay doesn't account for.

Some apps let you tip before the delivery is made and adjust afterward; pre-tipping generously (rather than a low pre-tip with a plan to adjust up later) tends to get orders accepted and delivered faster, since some drivers can see and prioritize better-tipped orders before accepting them.

Tipping in cash vs. through the app

Both work, but an in-app tip is transparent and traceable, while a cash tip added on top of a modest in-app tip is a way to reward specifically excellent service after the fact without having pre-committed to a higher number before you knew how the delivery would go.
