Metric: 10 millimeters = 1 centimeter, 100 centimeters = 1 meter, 1,000 meters = 1 kilometer. The conversions are pure multiplication or division by ten. Imperial: 12 inches = 1 foot, 3 feet = 1 yard, 5,280 feet = 1 mile. The numbers are arbitrary and often prime, making math harder.

Most of the world uses metric. The US, Liberia, and Myanmar are the only countries that haven't officially adopted it — though even the US military and scientists use metric internally. For everyday life, speaking either system competently requires knowing the conversions to the other.

Key conversion factors

Length: 1 inch = 2.54 cm; 1 km ≈ 0.62 miles. Weight: 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lbs; 1 gram ≈ 0.035 ounces. Temperature: Celsius = (Fahrenheit − 32) × 5/9; Fahrenheit = (Celsius × 9/5) + 32. Volume: 1 liter ≈ 0.26 gallons; 1 gallon ≈ 3.78 liters.

Useful approximations for quick mental math: 1 km ≈ 0.6 miles or multiply by 0.6. 1 pound ≈ 0.45 kg. Celsius to Fahrenheit: double it and add 30 (close enough for weather). These aren't exact but they're close enough for most conversations.

Converting recipes and cooking

A recipe in cups but you have grams? 1 cup of all-purpose flour ≈ 120–130 grams; 1 cup sugar ≈ 200 grams; 1 cup butter ≈ 225 grams. Water is easier: 1 cup ≈ 240 ml. Oven temperatures: 350°F ≈ 175°C, 400°F ≈ 200°C.

Online converters remove the guesswork, but knowing the ballpark figures prevents you from accidentally multiplying all ingredient quantities by a factor of four.

Travel and international contexts

Car fuel: US gallons are smaller than imperial gallons (3.78L vs 4.54L). If your car gets 25 mpg (US), it's about 10 km/liter. Running shoes: European sizes are different from US sizes; a US 10 men's is roughly a 44 European. When traveling, learning 'this is about that' for the common conversions saves time and confusion.
