"What Do I Need on My Final?" — The Math, and How to Play It
Every finals week, millions of students do the same panicked mental math. It's a one-line formula — and knowing your exact number changes how you study, sometimes by revealing you need less than you feared, sometimes by telling you to renegotiate the target.
The formula behind the panic
Your course grade is a weighted average: existing work counts for (100% − final weight), the final for the rest. The score you need is (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal.
Concretely: an 82% current grade, an 85% target, and a 40% final means you need (85 − 82 × 0.6) / 0.4 = 89.5% on the exam. Suddenly the vague dread is a concrete study plan.
Reading your number
Below 70%? Relax and do normal review — protect against disaster rather than chase perfection. Between 75–90%? That's a real but achievable lift; give it structured study days. Above 95%? Be honest about whether that's likely, and consider what grade IS securable instead.
Over 100% means the target is mathematically gone through the final alone. That's useful information too: ask about extra credit now (not after grades post), or redirect your limited study hours to a course where they can still move the outcome.
The weight changes everything
A final worth 15% can barely move your grade — an 85% average stays between 72.3% and 87.3% no matter what happens. A final worth 50% can swing the same student from a 42.5% to a 92.5%. Check the syllabus weight before deciding how much of finals week each course deserves.
This cuts both ways: heavy finals are dangerous when you're ahead and golden when you're behind. A strong student protects a lead by studying for the heavy final; a struggling one gets a genuine second chance from it.
Strategy across multiple finals
Compute your needed score for every course, then allocate hours where points are winnable: a course needing 78% deserves more time than one needing 99% or one already locked at 40%. Grades are a portfolio — optimize the total, not each course in isolation.
