Percentage Tricks: Do Almost Any Percent Problem in Your Head

Percentages are everywhere — sales, tips, raises, statistics — and yet most adults reach for a phone to compute 15% of anything. A handful of tricks covers nearly every everyday case, and knowing them also protects you from the ways percentages mislead.

Anchor on 10% and 1%

Ten percent is just the decimal point moved one place left: 10% of $84 is $8.40. One percent moves it two places: $0.84. Every other percentage is built from those two blocks — 20% is double the 10%, 5% is half of it, 15% is one-and-a-half, 3% is triple the 1%.

So 35% of 240? That's 24 × 3 + 12 = 84. With a little practice this becomes automatic, and faster than unlocking your phone.

The reversal trick

X% of Y always equals Y% of X. That's not a coincidence — both equal X × Y / 100 — and it turns ugly problems into easy ones. 4% of 75 feels hard; 75% of 4 is obviously 3. 16% of 25 is 25% of 16, which is 4.

Whenever a percentage problem looks awkward, flip it and check whether the other direction is friendlier. About half the time, it is.

Percentage change, without the formula panic

Percent change is the difference divided by where you started: a price going from $80 to $92 is 12/80 = 15% up. The direction matters — from $92 down to $80 is 12/92 ≈ 13% down. Same $12, different percentage, because the starting base changed.

That asymmetry has a famous trap: a 50% loss needs a 100% gain to recover. If your $1,000 investment drops by half to $500, growing back to $1,000 means doubling. Percentages don't cancel across directions.

Traps that fool almost everyone

Stacked discounts don't add: 20% off then 30% off the sale price is 44% off total, not 50%, because the second cut applies to a smaller base. Percentage points and percentages differ too — an interest rate rising from 4% to 6% went up two points but 50%.

And beware relative changes on small bases: a headline claiming a risk 'doubled' may mean it went from 1-in-a-million to 2-in-a-million. Always ask: percent of what?
